Wendell Castle Remastered

Wendell Castle Remastered will be the first museum exhibition to examine the digitally crafted works of Wendell Castle, acclaimed figure of the American art furniture movement. A master furniture maker, designer, sculptor, and educator, Castle is now in the sixth decade of a prolific career that began in 1958. In this solo exhibition, Castle casts a critical eye toward the first decade of his own artistic production by creating a new body of work that revisits his groundbreaking achievements in stack lamination of the 1960s through a contemporary lens. The catalogue—published by the Museum of Arts and Design and the Artist Book Foundation—includes a foreword by Glenn Adamson, Nanette L. Laitman Director of MAD; an introduction providing the exhibition’s thesis by Ronald T. Labaco, Marcia Doctor Senior Curator of MAD; an interview with the artist by Lowery Stokes Sims, former William and Mildred Lasdon Chief Curator of MAD; extended object analysis by Samantha De Tillio, Curatorial Assistant and Project Manager of MAD; and a case study examining Castle’s use of digital technology by Amy Cheatle and Steven J. Jackson, both of Cornell University.
