Railroads are iconic symbols of the American West. They provided critical lifelines for new communities but their greater influence was opening the West to the artists and writers who would transform how we look at the landscape itself. For generations the Southwest was depicted as a desolate biblical wilderness. The new desert aesthetic that took hold in literature and art directly followed the tracks into the New West.
