Carrie Moyer & Sheila Pepe: Tabernacles for Trying Times
Painter Carrie Moyer and sculptor Shelia Pepe have achieved international acclaim through abstract works that are rich in color and materiality and informed by feminist politics and queer activism.
Moyer and Pepe embrace and expand these values in Tabernacles for Trying Times, using representations of the tabernacle to create spaces for community and dialogue. While the artists describe the exhibition’s title as “loaded, funny, and even sweet,” the word “tabernacle” possesses many definitions throughout the world. A tabernacle is a place of worship used by some Christian groups. In a Catholic church it is a box that holds the holy bread and wine. And to the ancient Israelites, it was a small, portable tent used as a shelter or shrine. All of these definitions come together in the exhibition through the common ground shared by Pepe and Moyer, the former with strong roots in the leftist Catholic tradition; the latter raised in a secular home.
